The Web 2.0 Expo NY team will be using Twitter to provide conference updates we want you to know about.

Follow @w2e_ny08 if you are ATTENDING our event. Follow @w2e for general Web 2.0 Expo updates.

The reason we’re breaking up the twitter accounts is because we’re using Twittervision and want to capture what our community is saying about the event – to help inform folks, stay connected, and to stay relevant to what’s going on in NY.

If you’re following @w2e_ny08 – we’re following you back…unless we sent you a request you haven’t approved yet… nudge, nudge.

Direct Message us at any point if you’ve got a question, issue or something you’d like us to know. We’ll be keeping tabs, and we want to hear from you.

UPDATE: More BoFs have been added to the schedule since I wrote this post. If you’ve gotten a confirmation, it takes a bit for the session to show up on our website. If there are additional rooms available, there will be a write board on-site at the Hudson Hotel Boardrooms so you can sign up and make use of the space.

Be sure to see the latest schedule before you head over.

At every Web 2.0 Expo we hold Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions. These are sessions proposed and organized by our attendee community, and we support by providing the space and time.

This show had over 800 talk proposals (not even including the inquiries post-deadline), and it was impossible to take them all. So we’ve been encouraging folks to participate in our Web2Open and BoF programs.

The full BoF schedule is now up on our website and I’m incredibly impressed by what’s being presented. If the title sounds interesting, take a deeper dive with the links I’ve provided :)

WEDNESDAY
Server to Browser Data Synchronization Using XSTM and GWT
Health 2.0: Transforming an industry though Social Networks, Open Standards and Web 2.0

THURSDAY

All of the BoFs take place in the evening in the boardrooms of the trendy Hudson Hotel. Take a moment to check out what these community sessions have to offer!

Ignite returns to NYC as the kick-off event for our inaugural Web 2.0 Expo New York.

On Monday, September 15 we will have 10 Ignite speakers who each get just five minutes on stage. Bre Pettis, the co-creator of Ignite will be hosting a cupcake decorating contest. Ignite is going to be at New World Stages (340 West 50th Street) where we are a guest of the New York Television Festival. They are providing us with a ~400 person theater and free beer.

Speaker List:

Krikorian Raffi - holmz : open database for energy consumption
Deb Schultz – Alley vs Valley
Jennifer Pahlka – Technology Anxiety: Jello and Web 3.0
Sam Lessin – A very brief history of privacy in our data-deluged world
Nichelle Stephens – Cupcakes: The iPhone of Desserts
Don Carli – The Carbon Footprint of Banner Ads, Emails and Websites and why you should care
Nate Westheimer – Magic at the Democratic National Convention
Andrew Schneider – Experimental Devices for Performance
Audacia Ray – Porn as a front runner in technology innovations… With a twist

Here is a rough schedule for how the night will go.

7:00 Door & Bar opens

7:30 Cupcake Contest Begins

8:15 Cupcakes Contest Ends

8:45 Ignite Talks Begin

9:45 Ignite talks end; upstairs bar opens

If you plan on entering the cupcake decorating competition plan on bringing your own decorations. We will have some on-hand but if you are going to be the cupcake decorating champion of NYC then you’ll need to bring something unique. You will not be required to use our cupcakes; feel free to bring your own.

RSVP at Upcoming or Facebook to give us an idea of how many people to expect (but you do not have to, attendance is free).

many ignites

After this Ignite the New York community will be taking on the event (though I will come back next summer to do some). They’re already put up a community site; Tikva Morowati is on point if you are interested in being involved.

If you don’t live in New York (or Seattle or Portland) or anywhere with an Ignite start your own! I urged people at Gnomedex last week and we will soon have new Ignites in Vancouver, Nashville, Dallas and DC (they’ll soon be joining all of those logos to the right). Check out our community site for more information.

Tim O’Reilly wrote on his blog, as it relates to the theme for Web 2.0 Summit 2008 -

In an era of looming scarcities, economic disruption, and the possibility of catastrophic ecological change, it’s time for us all to wake up, to take our new “superpowers” seriously, and to use them to solve problems that really matter.

Inspired by this theme, Web 2.0 Expo New York is happy to announce the participants of our Non-Profit Pavilion. We selected 8 non-profit organizations who use Web 2.0 tools and technologies to achieve their mission. They will have booths on the Expo floor, and the pavilion is called out on the map in our Program Guides.

Stop by their booths, visit their website – lend your support!
