I was debating on what personal laptop to get and since I was traveling so much my requirements were small, portable and light. The Netbooks were the perfect answer but I thought they all ran on Linux and I had not yet gone that geek (yet).

During Web 2.0 Expo Europe I was sitting in the greenroom with ex-Netvibes CEO Tariq Krim before his keynote. I complimented his perfectly small, lightweight, inexpensive laptop is laptop which had this great-looking desktop. It was a version of his new project, Jolicloud, a new linux-based OS that was clean, simple and made for Netbooks.

Fab-u-lous.

Here’s a sneak peak at what the interface looks like. More to come and larger images can be seen on the Jolicloud Flickr page.

For those of you who are interested in hearing Tariq speak about entrepreneurship, watch this 10-min video clip of his Web 2.0 Expo Europe keynote.

Q. How do you think the financial crisis will affect the Web 2.0 business itself?

A. Web 2.0 is the Recession Diet.

That was just one of the many questions that was asked during the Tim O’Reilly and Web 2.0 Expo conference chair roundtable that was held at Web 2.0 Expo Europe last October in Berlin. This intimate and exclusive session was the culmination of an intense blogger relations program dubbed Blogging Web 2.0 Expo Europe.

It began as an invite-only Q&A to 25 of our strongest blog partners but with all the live-tweeting and live-blogging about it we ended up with about 50 total visitors in our community lounge – listening to Tim, Jen and Brady share insights, answer question and in general chat, in an intimate and casual setting.

We viewed the session as a huge success and everyone involved had a lot of fun participating (which is the most important thing, right?).

It’s a bit late in coming, but the winter hibernation is slowly subsiding… so here is the promised recap of the really amazing content that came from this event. Thank you everyone who participated. We really appreciated your collaboration, enthusiasm, and attendance. It was truly all about community!

The BerlinBlase crew did a phenomenal job capturing the event through their live tweets and some video. They consolidated everything into a single page for your viewing pleasure. Check out the links!

The video above was filmed by Andrea Vascellari, our top Italian blogger. More Andrea videos and stories linked here:

And more intelligent ruminations and insights as a result of the discussion at the roundtable ~

I’m a travel fiend and fell in love with Dopplr, an online service for smarter travel.

Dopplr helps you make more of your travels by sharing your future trips privately with friends and colleagues. The service then highlights coincidences, for example, telling you that three people you know will be in Tokyo when you will be there too. You can use Dopplr on your personal computer or mobile phone. It links with many popular online calendars and social networks.

I log where I’m going and all of a sudden I know who in my network will be in town. I’ve found it to be a great tool for serendipitous meetings around the country; around the world. Fun!

Late last year the great folks at Dopplr added a groups feature which let us track the various countries that attended Web 2.0 Expo Europe in Berlin.

Pretty, pretty cool.

Well, we’ve established group pages for Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco and if you’re a fan of serendipitous meetings, join our group and represent your home town

:)

There’s also a group for Web 2.0 Summit 2009 and we’ll get one set up for our fall New York show as well.

If you want to learn more about Dopplr and the new stuff they are launching – take a look at their blog.

Happy traveling folks. Hope to see you in San Francisco!

The 3rd annual BarCamp Berlin will take place 18-19 Oktober, the weekend before Web 2.0 Expo Europe.

BarCamp is a giant unconference, a conference that self-organizes sessions and content on-site. There are no pre-scheduled talks but in the truest sense of crowdsourcing, sessions are proposed and voted on amongst the peers in attendance.

Typically Expo holds an “official unconference” at every show, but for Web 2.0 Expo Europe we collaborated with BarCamp Berlin to BE our official unconference.

And today I got word that there were 20 spots available for international guests. What does that mean? Here are examples:

Germans living in the UK – OK

Americans living in Germany – Not OK

There will be 700 plus people attending this weekend event and I’ll personally be volunteering at registration on Saturday morning to do some bleary-eyed meet and greeting. If you’re planning to come into town for Web 2.0 Expo Europe – this might be a great way to mingle and geek out beforehand.

Oh, and they are throwing a welcome party Friday night for registrants… maybe a good incentive?

Setting up an event is A LOT of work – un or real conference. BarCamp organizers around the world create this event for their community, in exchange for goodwill. It’s an honorable job. Tobias Kaufmann, one of the ten BarCamp Berlin3 organizers, and I were debating if we should hold a session on conference organizing – similarities, differences, challenges… we’ll work on the concept a bit more. Or maybe we can do a session on Community Management?

You’ll have to attend to see what we settle on. Hopefully we’ll see you there :)

Wow, its one week now till we will see you guys in Berlin. It is going to be a week full of networking, partying and last but not least doing weird geek stuff. Some of you might not be registered by now, so…

… how about a guaranteed seat at BarCamp Berlin 3 and a complimentary pass to Web 2.0 Expo Europe?

Here are the rules:

1. Read this entry to its end
2. Solve the riddle ;-)
3. Post your answer as a comment
4. The first to solve has guaranteed entry to BarCamp Berlin 3 and a free complimentary code to Web 2.0 Expo Europe.
5. People already registered are not allowed to participate

Do you know about “a Google”? A Google is a searchterm entered at Google which gives back only one site as result! Example: “coffee karma friedrichshain jones oskar fribourg jagger kreativitt voyager”

You guys have to find one for us but three keywords have to be in it: “Web20Expo” “Barcamp” and “Berlin”

The first one to enter a solution here wins, the first to post a solution at the BarCamp Berlin Blog wins too!

Have fun!
