TheWeb 2.0 Expo NY backchannel is a place to chat with the community about what’s going on in the tracks and onsite at the show. There are two ways to get on the backchannel, which comes to you via Six Groups Livecommunity:

1) Through Crowdvine, the conference social network. On any Crowdvine page, click “Livestream” in the gray bar at the very top of the page. You’ll see a stream of all the current backchannel posts for the whole conference. Select the track you want to follow, and/or add a comment in the “Say something” box.

UPDATE: More BoFs have been added to the schedule since I wrote this post. If you’ve gotten a confirmation, it takes a bit for the session to show up on our website. If there are additional rooms available, there will be a write board on-site at the Hudson Hotel Boardrooms so you can sign up and make use of the space.

Be sure to see the latest schedule before you head over.

At every Web 2.0 Expo we hold Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions. These are sessions proposed and organized by our attendee community, and we support by providing the space and time.

This show had over 800 talk proposals (not even including the inquiries post-deadline), and it was impossible to take them all. So we’ve been encouraging folks to participate in our Web2Open and BoF programs.

The full BoF schedule is now up on our website and I’m incredibly impressed by what’s being presented. If the title sounds interesting, take a deeper dive with the links I’ve provided :)

WEDNESDAY
Server to Browser Data Synchronization Using XSTM and GWT
Health 2.0: Transforming an industry though Social Networks, Open Standards and Web 2.0
The Virtual Startup
Higher Education and the Web 2.0 World
Starting an Internet Startup Without Internet Experience
Cloud Watching – Managing and Monitoring Your Virtual Computing
Building a Kickass Network

THURSDAY
The Past, Present and Future of Travel on the Net and How to Profit from It!
Britains Got Digital Talent

All of the BoFs take place in the evening in the boardrooms of the trendy Hudson Hotel. Take a moment to check out what these community sessions have to offer!

Ignite returns to NYC as the kick-off event for our inaugural Web 2.0 Expo New York.

On Monday, September 15 we will have 10 Ignite speakers who each get just five minutes on stage. Bre Pettis, the co-creator of Ignite will be hosting a cupcake decorating contest. Ignite is going to be at New World Stages (340 West 50th Street) where we are a guest of the New York Television Festival. They are providing us with a ~400 person theater and free beer.

Speaker List:

Krikorian Raffi - holmz : open database for energy consumption
Deb Schultz – Alley vs Valley
Jennifer Pahlka – Technology Anxiety: Jello and Web 3.0
Sam Lessin – A very brief history of privacy in our data-deluged world
Nichelle Stephens – Cupcakes: The iPhone of Desserts
Don Carli – The Carbon Footprint of Banner Ads, Emails and Websites and why you should care
Nate Westheimer – Magic at the Democratic National Convention
Andrew Schneider – Experimental Devices for Performance
Audacia Ray – Porn as a front runner in technology innovations… With a twist

Here is a rough schedule for how the night will go.

7:00 Door & Bar opens

7:30 Cupcake Contest Begins

8:15 Cupcakes Contest Ends

8:45 Ignite Talks Begin

9:45 Ignite talks end; upstairs bar opens

If you plan on entering the cupcake decorating competition plan on bringing your own decorations. We will have some on-hand but if you are going to be the cupcake decorating champion of NYC then you’ll need to bring something unique. You will not be required to use our cupcakes; feel free to bring your own.

RSVP at Upcoming or Facebook to give us an idea of how many people to expect (but you do not have to, attendance is free).

many ignites

After this Ignite the New York community will be taking on the event (though I will come back next summer to do some). They’re already put up a community site; Tikva Morowati is on point if you are interested in being involved.

If you don’t live in New York (or Seattle or Portland) or anywhere with an Ignite start your own! I urged people at Gnomedex last week and we will soon have new Ignites in Vancouver, Nashville, Dallas and DC (they’ll soon be joining all of those logos to the right). Check out our community site for more information.

Web 2.0 Expo Europe is approaching and we are truly excited to tap into our European community!

Reposted from Suw Charman, Web 2.0 Expo Europe’s ‘Community’ Keynote speaker and prominent UK blogger.

Alongside Stephanie Booth and Nicole Simon, Im organising the Web 2.0 Expo Europe blogger outreach programme which weve snappily titled Blogging Web 2.0 Expo Europe. The idea is to gather together a community of enthusiastic bloggers who are interested in writing about the event and spurring their readers/colleagues/friends to sign up. In return, theyll get a complimentary pass to the conference worth, well frankly, lots of dosh!

You probably already know about Web 2.0 Expo. Its aimed at web designers and developers, product managers, entrepreneurs, VCs, marketers, and business strategists who are embracing the opportunities created by Web 2.0 technologies. It takes place in Berlin, on 21 – 23 October 2008, and keynote speakers include John Lilly (Mozilla), Martin Varsavsky (FON), and Tariq Krim (NetVibes).

The way the blogging programme will work is that well ask participants to do these few things between now and 6th October:

  • publish at least 4 Web 2.0 Expo-related blog posts, podcast episodes or videocasts, e.g. announcement of the event, speaker information, speaker interviews, or any other event-related stuff
  • encourage readers, friends, and/or community to register for the event
  • display the Web 2.0 Expo logo on their blog, with a link to the registration page, until the day of the conference

We think thats pretty easy, but to help you along, well provide participating bloggers with:

  • event badges
  • a discount code to share with readers, colleagues and friends
  • access to information about the event suitable for re-blogging, such as announcements and speaker information/interviews (when possible)

In return, bloggers will get a full conference pass to either use themselves or give away to readers.

But thats not all The five bloggers who have done the best job of promoting the conference, measured both by effort and referrals, will be upgraded to a Premier Blogger Pass with full conference access, e.g. to the press room, to speakers for live interviews and other goodies we are in the process of putting together. We will announce the winners of the Premier Blogger Passes and confirm Complementary Passes on 7th October.

But wait! Even thats not all! As participants discount code will be unique to them, well be able to tell how many people theyve referred to us, and there will be something special for the person who has referred the most attendees, counted right up until the moment registration closes.

What type of bloggers are we looking for? We want to spread our net wide, so we will welcome blogs, whether monolingual or bilingual, in any of the major European languages. (Indeed, well be trying to ensure there arent too many English-only writers!) Size doesnt matter – whether youre the biggest Czech tech blogger there is or have a small but enthusiastic audience who you think will be just chomping at the bit to get hold of a discount, get in touch. Were after passion, enthusiasm, and persuasiveness: Its your ability to persuade people to sign up that counts!

Weve a limited number of places on the programme, so act now, and well let you know as soon as we can whether youve secured a spot.

Were aiming to kick things off properly next Tuesday 9th September, so please do email me right away if youre interested.

One thing to note is that not only might things change as the programme develops, but they may change in direct response to your feedback. Wed like to know what you think about this outreach programme, so do leave a comment and give us your thoughts.
