You’ve a few days left before we close our Early Price period (Deadline: September 22), and not much longer after until we start selling out of passes.

Haven’t had time yet to look through this year’s amazing content, speaker lineup and after hours parties? Fear not: We’ve put together a quick list of the top reasons to head to NYC for this year’s premier event for web professionals.

We’re back for a fifth year of intense talks, high-level keynotes, a lively expo hall, and – of course – parties.

This year, Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco 2011 will teach you how to unlock the digital economy.

Encompassing the Web, mobile networks and connected devices, the digital economy spawns a host of new businesses every year. But how, exactly, do you become the next Groupon, Foursquare or Zynga? Who’s doing the smart stuff, making money and making a difference?

At our show in March, we’ll reveal the key pieces of the digital economy and the ways you can leverage important ideas for your own success. We’ll apply the economic filter to data collection, social connections, social media platforms, browser successes, old media in new channels, global commerce and much more.

Web 2.0 Expo Evening Event

What’s New This Year

Conversations

First up, our Conversations. Instead of holding just traditional speaker-and-audience sessions, we’re also creating a handful of 50-minute round-table conversations that you can join. But space is limited! We’re signing on an appealing list of Web 2.0 experts, each of whom will introduce a topic and then facilitate a discussion for up to 30 people—which is all the room holds. If you get into one of these sessions, you’ll be expected to lean in and join the conversation, not just sit back and listen. We’ll announce the moderators and specific topics in the coming weeks.

Startup Showcase

Launched at our New York 2010 show this past fall, our evening Startup Showcase event will bring approximately 30 startups demoing in one large room. Web 2.0 Expo attendees and a panel of judges from the investor community will have 50 minutes to visit the demos and listen to the pitches—we’ll sound a chime every five minutes, letting people know it’s time to circulate. As they walk around, attendees will vote on their favorite demos. At the end of the hour, the judges will announce their top picks along with the audience favorite. These winning startups will then each give a pitch and have an on-stage conversation with the judges.

A formal call for companies to participate in the Startup Showcase will open in late January. Make sure you are signed up for our bulletin to be notified when the call opens. Check out our Startup Showcase video from our New York show.

Product Track

Our conference is broken into several discipline-focused tracks such as Social Media or Design & UI. New this year is our Product track, featuring such session as

From Product Zero to Product Hero: How to Build a Great Web 2.0 Product

Don’t be a Digital Dinosaur: Design for the Space Between

Design Essentials For Developers

From Product Zero to Product Hero: How to Build a Great Web 2.0 Product

Don’t listen to yourself: successfully re-designing Latin America’s leading e-commerce platform

And More

Stay tuned to this blog, our bulletin, and our Twitter account (@w2e) for more updates on what’s new for Web 2.0 Expo this year.

See you in March!

Our vision for Web 2.0 Expo NY looks like this: smart leaders, looking toward the future of the web, gather together in a lively venue to meet, exchange ideas,  and get a serious dose of inspiration. You make connections, you learn a lot, you have fun.

Here’s what Expo NY looked like last year: smart leaders, looking toward the future of the web, gathered in the vast lobby of the Javits Center and had a hard time finding our show at all. The Web 2.0 Expo signs were obscured by the much larger banners of a manufactured chemicals show that was in town the same week–and the conference portion of our show, in line with the Javits layout, was in the basement.

New York hosts not only a burgeoning tech startup scene, but also thousands of people who lead tech adoption in sectors like media, fashion, finance and the arts. Attendees of Web 2.0 Expo have repeatedly told us that they’re part of these groups, and they’re looking to our show to help them connect. So while Javits, like most expo halls, has acres of space designed to show off everything from  new cars to fancy packaged foods, it’s not an ideal place for the Web 2.0 community to meet.

This year, to better align the venue with our vision and our attendees’ needs, we’re moving to the Sheraton Hotel & Towers in midtown. It’s better suited to fostering the kinds of connections we care about and, excitingly, it lets us hold evening program onsite.

We’ve cooked up three great nights. On September 27, we’re bringing back an annual Expo favorite: Ignite, a fast-moving series of entertaining and enlightening presentations (with all-new speakers). On September 28, we’re hosting The Liar Show: four people tell outrageous tech stories–but only three are true. Grill the storytellers and guess which is fiction. On September 29, we’re holding Startup Showcase, in which 30 young companies demo their products, and you help pick three to join Tim O’Reilly and Fred Wilson for onstage pitch sessions. Of course, our evening events all include food and bevvies.

What else would you do with a conference-friendly hotel space?

We’re pleased to introduce a brand new program at Web 2.0 Expo New York this year that’s specifically designed to get your new company great exposure in front of hundreds of potential users, investors, as well as Tim O’Reilly and Fred Wilson: Our Startup Showcase.

The application period ends August 2, so apply now. If you want to attend Startup Showcase as an audience member, register here with code webny10scm4 to save 25% (even our Web 2.0 Expo Lite pass gets you in).

The Format

On the third day of Web 2.0 Expo New York – Wednesday, September 29 – approximately 30 startups will demo in one large room. We’ll provide you with a small table and room for two people to demo—you’ll bring a laptop (or two) and a founder (or two).

Web 2.0 Expo attendees will have 50 minutes to see all the demos, and a bell will chime every 5 minutes letting people know it’s time to move to another table. As they walk around the hall, attendees will vote on their favorite startup.

After the 50 minutes is up, Tim O’Reilly and Fred Wilson will each announce their top pick along with the audience favorite. These three startups will then each give a pitch and have an on-stage conversation with Tim and Fred.

Who Should Apply?

  • relatively young startups that aren’t drowning in investment (yet)
  • companies in all technology areas: hardware, software, B2B, B2C, mobile (just to name the most obvious categories)

For more information and to submit your application, check out our Startup Showcase page on the Web 2.0 Expo New York site or contact us @w2e.

Good luck!

Come to Web 2.0 Expo New York 2010 with a heavily discounted or FREE pass this year by playing in our bi-annual “Tweet This” Contest. Read on for more info:

Here’s the Deal

“Use discount code [FAKE] for 25% off a Web 2.0 Expo NY conference pass—discount ends Sept 19! #w2e http://oreil.ly/czJyUt”

Tweet this sentence to enough of your friends, and you could earn a deeply discounted or free full-price Web 2.0 Expo New York conference pass. Every time someone buys a conference pass using your personalized discount code (which we will send you—read on), you get an additional 10% off the cost of a full-price pass. That’s on top of the 25% discount we will give you for participating.

Here’s How to Play

  • Sign up for the contest at the bottom of this post (scroll down, please!). All we need is your name and an email address to send you a personalized code. Space fills up fast and is limited to the first 100 people who apply.
  • Tweet the discount code we give you to your followers so they can sign up using it.
  • Kick back and let us do the rest of the work. We’ll contact you on September 20 to tell you how many people signed up using your code… and also to tell you how much money will be shaved off your conference pass.

If you already have a conference pass, you’re still more than welcome to participate. Although the credits you accrue will not work toward the pass you already purchased (retroactively that is), you will be able to earn another deeply discounted or fully paid-for pass for a friend or colleague.

You can also use your credits toward Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco 2011. One last thing—although we think Twitter is the easiest way for you to spread this deal, there is no restriction as to where you can post your code! Feel free to email your friends or post it on your Facebook account.

We are limiting this contest to the first 100 people who apply – so hurry! The discount code you are given will only work through September 19, so the sooner you start spreading the word the better.

Post any questions in the blog comments section or message us @w2e on Twitter.

Good luck!
