Web 2.0 Expo began eons ago in Internet Years – April of 2007 – in San Francisco. It was the first conference and tradeshow for the rapidly growing ranks of designers and developers, product managers, entrepreneurs, VCs, marketers, and business strategists who embraced the opportunities created by Web 2.0, a term coined at the birth of Web 2.0 Summit (formerly named Web 2.0 Conference), a joint venture between O’Reilly Media , UBM TechWeb, and Federated Media.

We added our popular New York show in 2008. This bicoastal expo and multi-track conference brought together people, ideas, connections, contacts, products, and companies to foster stronger Web 2.0 communities. It featured influential keynotes and speakers, detailed workshops, a Startup Showcase, an Expo show floor, and rich networking events.

And while Web 2.0 Expo continues to be a vibrant brand, the evolving market conditions surrounding the web ecosystem have led to a decision by the co-producers of Web 2.0 Expo events, UBM TechWeb and O’Reilly, to discontinue the production of the bi-annual Web 2.0 Expo SF & NY indefinitely. (The partners continue to discuss possibilities around Web 2.0 Summit in 2012, and will update you when plans have solidified.)

We’ve had a great time bringing you this amazing show year after year. And now at its close, we’d like to share with you a few of our favorite things from Web 2.0 Expo:

Gary Vaynerchuk’s keynote in New York from 2008. His message of doing what you love resonated with a lot of people and is one of our most popular and frequently shared videos.

Rana Sobhany’s presentation from NY 2010 encapsulates so much of how Web 2.0 technologies and devices are changing not just business but popular culture, enabling people to be more creative, and to connect and have fun IRL too, not just digitally.

This is one of Tim O’Reilly’s most thought-provoking keynotes from the conference series and a good summary of the evolution of Web 2.0.

Carlota Perez at Web 2.0 Expo New York this year dazzled the audience with her brilliance as Fred Wilson interviewed her.

Hi Kaitlin,

The W2E bag that we’re giving to attendees has San Francisco misspelled (San Franciso)… a little embarrassing (okay… a lot embarrassing).  Can you come up with a cute apology to tweet so we can acknowledge it ahead of time?  Please send the proposed tweet to this group first.


Oh boy. That was embarrassing. We had a large team of people who supposedly reviewed the bag before it went to print, including me. And none of us caught it.

Although we only used a few of them, here are all the tweets I wrote to deal with this slight emergency:

@w2e So… how about them conference bags? Yea, our English teachers from high school just called to chew us out.

@w2e We like turning lemons into lemonade. Think of this year’s conference bag as the big version of those stamps with the upside down airplane. Except replace airplane w/ super embarrassing spelling error. #w2e

We’ve officially SOLD OUT of our popular Web 2.0 Lite pass, and while we still have full conference badges available (for now), we realize there’s a significant demand for a budget-friendly option.

In the interest of making our content more accessible to all, today we’re announcing a new $50 Expo Hall Only pass. As the name suggests, this pass gives holders access to our Expo Hall as well as Sponsored Sessions. However, it does not grant access to keynotes, regular conference sessions, or evening events.

If you had five minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? Would you pitch a project? Launch a web site? Teach a hack? We’re going to find out at Ignite, a fun evening of “speed presentations” given by people like you.

On Monday, March 28, at Mezzanine (444 Jessie Street @ Mint), we’ve got 13 great speakers who will each give a geeky five-minute talk. Their presentations will consist of 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds.

This year for the first time at Web 2.0 Expo SF, we’re hosting Startup Showcase. It was a huge hit at Expo NY 2010 (here’s the video of part of it), and we expect it to explode in SF. Highlighting the startup ecosystem’s creativity and variety, the Showcase gives you a chance to get in front of hundreds of potential users and a couple of high-profile investors. On Tuesday night, March 29th, we’re going to have 30 startups demoing in one large room. We’ll provide you with a small table and two passes to get into the show—you’ll bring a laptop (or two) and a founder (or two).

Expo attendees will have 60 minutes to see your demos. As they walk around, attendees will vote on their favorite demos. At the end of the hour, Tim O’Reilly and Ann Winblad will announce their top four picks and the audience favorite. These five startups will each give a one-minute pitch to the audience and will have a short time onstage to get feedback from Tim and Ann.

How do you qualify? We’re looking for:

  • Relatively young startups that aren’t drowning in investment (yet)
  • Companies in all technology areas: hardware, software, B2B, B2C, mobile (just to name the most obvious categories)

If selected:

  • You’ll supply your own laptop for the demos (we won’t provide power, so we recommend bringing two laptops)
  • You’ll bring a maximum of two people (at least one of whom must be a founder or C-level equivalent; ideally, one of them would also be a woman)
  • The week prior to the event, you’ll supply us with a presentation of 2-4 slides that includes screenshots for your onstage pitch in case you are selected by Tim and Ann

If you’re among the five winners, you’ll give a one-minute pitch onstage and get direct feedback from Tim and Ann.

Today we’re proud to announce the list of participating non-profits in our third annual Non-Profit Pavilion. These non-profits will be featured as exhibitors and given booth space in the Web 2.0 Expo show floor alongside our other exhibitors and sponsors.

A committee of Web 2.0 Expo influencers selected the following nonprofits based on how each uses Web 2.0 tools and technologies in their work. Each organization will be supplied with booth space, on-site branding, an Internet connection, and inclusion in the online and printed events guide, completely free of charge.

We are once again hosting a Non-Profit Pavilion at Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco. If your organization is a registered 501c3 non-profit and uses Web 2.0 technologies to support your cause, mission, or community goals, we invite you to apply for a spot in our Pavilion.

The deadline to apply is January 30 at 11:59 p.m. PST.

Last year’s non-profits included the ACLU of Northern California, Code for America, Internet Systems Consortium, and the SETI Institute among others.

We will choose 10 non-profits to participate in the Pavilion (located on the Expo Hall floor). Each organization will be supplied with booth space, on-site branding, an Internet connection, and inclusion in the online and printed events guide, completely free of charge.

An internal Web 2.0 Expo committee will select the booth recipients and announcements will be made the first week of February.
