Thanks everyone for submitting to our Startup Ignite show!! It was a really tough decision but we’ve made our selections for final presenters.

Congratulations to aka-aki, SoundCloud, Amazee and iDesktop.tv!!

We have some runner ups and we’ll announce which of two of these four startups will get added to our show in the next 24 hours – Goojet, plista, Wizpac, Yoolink Pro.

Startup Ignite will take place in the BCC main hall on Tuesday, October 21st, from 17:15 – 18:00.

This will take place immediately after our keynotes so doors will open for general seating at 15:45.

(and I only missed my Wednesday announcement promise by an hour… but that really depends on what time zone you’re in…)

Guess many folks didn’t realize you have the option to attend Web 2.0 Expo Europe for 13.

With the Expo Hall pass you get access to all of this:

With the launch of our new on-site Community Lounge we’ve decided to cancel the Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions we normally hold after hours.

So if you were interested in scheduling a BoF – please take a look at our community meeting space, with conference table seating for up to 30 people.

And you can hold your meeting at the BCC during Web 2.0 Expo Europe. It’s an open space for all registered attendees. Take a look and and leave a comment here for a meeting time.

At Web 2.0 Expo New York last month The Barbarian Group contributed an interactive digital installation for our conference guests to enjoy.

The McCleod Mirror is based on the concept of being an individual. And that to know oneself, we have to see ourselves.

The original concept was an installation for a Nokia store, where they made a processing-based software application that took the input from a webcam and assembled a mosaic of the image from the webcam, using a series of pre-stored images, text, and previous input from the webcam. All the source images were the same size, and square, which felt a bit limiting, but the video made for a nice effect.

The Barbarian Group them partnered up with the McLeod Residence, a new type of interactive art gallery and space in Seattle, WA. They tweaked their code and got the mirrors working with images of different sizes, creating an entirely new sensation.

Guests at Web 2.0 Expo took photos of their reflected images and posted it to our Flickr group.

(Thanks to Duncan, one of our official event photographers for setting that up for us)

We’re a big fan of the digital arts community – and a few months back during Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco we coordinated with Gray Area Gallery, an SF-based visual arts gallery with their launch of Gray Area Beacon, a temporary art space in SOMA. They, in turn, shared some of the great digital work of Aaron Koblin in our bloggers lounge.

Aaron is the genius behind the sheep market and his piece Flight Patterns, a visualization of parsed and plotted FAA data, was added to the Museum of Modern Art in New York’s permanent collection.

For Web 2.0 Expo Europe we had this idea to create “virtual break rooms” … for folks who needed some down time while on-site. Unfortunately my artist had to take a trip overseas so it doesn’t seem like we’ll make it in time for the event but… I’ll stop from giving it all away, just in case.

Berlin in particular is a city bubbling with artists but the world is our playground and the Web is everywhere. So if you are a digital artist and want to share some of your work with us – either via web or perhaps for some future installation. . . leave a comment, share your art… let us know.

The 3rd annual BarCamp Berlin will take place 18-19 Oktober, the weekend before Web 2.0 Expo Europe.

BarCamp is a giant unconference, a conference that self-organizes sessions and content on-site. There are no pre-scheduled talks but in the truest sense of crowdsourcing, sessions are proposed and voted on amongst the peers in attendance.

Typically Expo holds an “official unconference” at every show, but for Web 2.0 Expo Europe we collaborated with BarCamp Berlin to BE our official unconference.

And today I got word that there were 20 spots available for international guests. What does that mean? Here are examples:

Germans living in the UK – OK

Americans living in Germany – Not OK

There will be 700 plus people attending this weekend event and I’ll personally be volunteering at registration on Saturday morning to do some bleary-eyed meet and greeting. If you’re planning to come into town for Web 2.0 Expo Europe – this might be a great way to mingle and geek out beforehand.

Oh, and they are throwing a welcome party Friday night for registrants… maybe a good incentive?

Setting up an event is A LOT of work – un or real conference. BarCamp organizers around the world create this event for their community, in exchange for goodwill. It’s an honorable job. Tobias Kaufmann, one of the ten BarCamp Berlin3 organizers, and I were debating if we should hold a session on conference organizing – similarities, differences, challenges… we’ll work on the concept a bit more. Or maybe we can do a session on Community Management?

You’ll have to attend to see what we settle on. Hopefully we’ll see you there :)

If you are going to a conference which is all about the future of the internet, you want to arrive in style. Or at least, I want to. So, at the end of September I started thinking about the best way to get to Berlin. Naturally, it had to be innovative. But innovation is not easy as most of the forms of transport have been around for ages. So how can you be innovative in that situation? That was the question that triggered travel 2.0.

After looking around for a suitable vehicle, Ford was the one to step up to the idea. Travel 2.0 will center around a Ford S-Max 2.5 Turbo. A car loaded with gadgets, which fits the concept perfectly. But we have to do more than that. This means that we will be mounting a camera in the Ford for the trip to Berlin and that will be broadcasting live through Dutch Cowboys. But just allowing you to watch is not enough. That is why you can call in to ask us all about the car, but also on our view of the future of marketing and the internet. A completely interactive journey. And of course, I will not be alone. Erno Hannink will also be riding with me, but we are having two more open seats in the S-Max. And these two seats will be offered to the winners of the two tickets of the Web 2.0 Expo that are being raffled off by Dutch Cowboys. So, you are not just getting tickets, you are also getting a free ride!

Of course the journey to Berlin is not just about us and the Ford S-Max. It really is all about others. If you are a startup, if you have a brilliant idea, or you have something else you want to pitch, you are welcome to our Pitch-Stops. The first Pitch-Stop will be held in Arnhem. During the Pitch-Stops you can get into the backseat of the S-Max to pitch your company or idea for five minutes. You pitch will be broadcasted live on Dutch Cowboys as well. And that means that you are having a huge podium for your idea. If you cannot make Arnhem, that is no problem at all. We are in Berlin all week at the Web 2.0 Expo and everyone who has a good pitch can get into the backseat of the S-Max which will be parked next to the entrance of the Expo. Let us know and before you know it the world will be streaming at your feet.

Wow, its one week now till we will see you guys in Berlin. It is going to be a week full of networking, partying and last but not least doing weird geek stuff. Some of you might not be registered by now, so…

… how about a guaranteed seat at BarCamp Berlin 3 and a complimentary pass to Web 2.0 Expo Europe?

Here are the rules:

1. Read this entry to its end
2. Solve the riddle ;-)
3. Post your answer as a comment
4. The first to solve has guaranteed entry to BarCamp Berlin 3 and a free complimentary code to Web 2.0 Expo Europe.
5. People already registered are not allowed to participate

Do you know about “a Google”? A Google is a searchterm entered at Google which gives back only one site as result! Example: “coffee karma friedrichshain jones oskar fribourg jagger kreativitt voyager”

You guys have to find one for us but three keywords have to be in it: “Web20Expo” “Barcamp” and “Berlin”

The first one to enter a solution here wins, the first to post a solution at the BarCamp Berlin Blog wins too!

Have fun!
