Q. How do you think the financial crisis will affect the Web 2.0 business itself?

A. Web 2.0 is the Recession Diet.

That was just one of the many questions that was asked during the Tim O’Reilly and Web 2.0 Expo conference chair roundtable that was held at Web 2.0 Expo Europe last October in Berlin. This intimate and exclusive session was the culmination of an intense blogger relations program dubbed Blogging Web 2.0 Expo Europe.

It began as an invite-only Q&A to 25 of our strongest blog partners but with all the live-tweeting and live-blogging about it we ended up with about 50 total visitors in our community lounge - listening to Tim, Jen and Brady share insights, answer question and in general chat, in an intimate and casual setting.

We viewed the session as a huge success and everyone involved had a lot of fun participating (which is the most important thing, right?).

It’s a bit late in coming, but the winter hibernation is slowly subsiding… so here is the promised recap of the really amazing content that came from this event. Thank you everyone who participated. We really appreciated your collaboration, enthusiasm, and attendance. It was truly all about community!

The BerlinBlase crew did a phenomenal job capturing the event through their live tweets and some video. They consolidated everything into a single page for your viewing pleasure. Check out the links!

The video above was filmed by Andrea Vascellari, our top Italian blogger. More Andrea videos and stories linked here:

And more intelligent ruminations and insights as a result of the discussion at the roundtable ~

As the team gears up this week to present the fifth Web 2.0 Summit, our San Francisco thought-leadership conference, I wanted to take a moment to issue a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended Web 2.0 Expo Europe. And that includes the many folks who couldn’t take the trip out to Berlin but still managed to participate remotely via bed-blogging, retweeting and pre-event support.

I can confidently say we had a hugely successful & completely fabulous event – garnered from your feedback, testimonials, and the overall positive energy that lived at the BCC during the three days of our conference and expo.

A few days of finally catching up on bad American TV and I feel almost human again. :)

Thank you guests, speakers, blog partners, media members, sponsors, exhibitors and the TechWeb & O’Reilly Media event team.

Thank you Tim, Jen, Brady & bloggers for a phenomenal roundtable discussion.

Thank you Berlin Partner, BCC, SoundCloud for the reception music, our VC judges and startups that participated in Startup Ignite, Rama Gottfried for the virtual break rooms, our blogger mavens who helped us execute our Blogging Web 2.0 Expo Europe outreach program, all the bloggers that participated, PitchStop, BarCamp Berlin, and the larger Web community in Europe who made this event come to life.

It was the combination of all the little things that turned this into such a great event - including the beautiful sunny weather we had.

A simple request for you - please provide us with your feedback. Leave a comment, send the team an email… let us know how your experience was.

See this post for details on presentations and video recordings of our keynotes and Startup Ignite.

Our PR team has posted some event articles and videos to our news & coverage page. And our amazing bloggers have done a phenomenal job with sharing their articles – I’ll be posting their details on this blog during the course of this week.

Stay tuned… and subscribe!
More great content to come.

And we welcome you to join us for Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco (March 31 - April 3, 2009)

Sincerely,
~ Janetti

Dear Sponsors & Exhibitors of Web 2.0 Expo Europe,

On behalf of the organizing team and our attendees - thank you for the contributions and support you provided to our event. You brought with you not only exciting new Web 2.0 tools, technologies and know-how but your presence showed a positivity about the potential for Web in a global environment that is muddled by concern.

As conference co-chair Jennifer Pahlka explained to me (and others at the event) - with all that is happening in our economies today, companies are going to need to start utilizing the advantages of scalability, reach and efficiencies that Web 2.0 brings.

Web 2.0 Expo Europe last week was a fabulous event - dynamic, networked, intelligent and community-driven. Your participation was pivitol in fueling the connections, learnings and experiences of everyone in attendance.

Thank you.

We hope you enjoyed your time with us and look forward to working with you again in the future.

~ Your team

UPDATE: Click the links to go directly to watch keynote videos and Startup Ignite.

I sent a tweet out last week but a quick note to those who are unaware, our speaker presentations can be accessed off our homepage or via this direct. They can also be accessed on Slideshare.net with the tag web2expoeu08.

[and no more tag jokes please, we know there were WAY too many. maybe i was simply crowdsourcing tag ideas for future events... :) ]

If you don’t find the presentations you’re looking for, go back to Crowdvine and please send a note to the speaker, they may not have provided it to us yet.

We officially filmed keynotes and Startup Ignite and we’ll get the videos up as soon as possible (and then I’ll update this post).

But you can find tons of other coverage, including videos, on our news page.

Thanks!

If you look out of the front doors of the Berliner Congress Center, you will see a black Ford S-Max parked right there. And it is there for a reason. Arne Hulstein has brought the car to the Web 2.0 Expo to give startups, new companies and people with great ideas a platform to promote their ideas on some great international blogs with a great audience in the Netherlands and Germany.

So, how do you get your pitch online? Head over to twitter and follow either @arnehulstein or @ernohannink. And then send them a message explaining who you are, what you do and what you want to pitch. That can get you into our car and onto the blogs. We will be there tuesday to thursday, so you do not have to miss out on any of your speakers. Just let us know what you want to do and we will get you sorted out.

Pitch to a broader audience, make a pitchstop.

Last week I wrote a post on ‘embracing digital art‘ at our Web 2.0 Expo’s.

This week at Web 2.0 Expo Europe we present our virtual break rooms — a web-based audio tour of the Berliner Congress Center.

Plug in your headsets and visit www.ramagottfried.com/bcc for a ‘virtual break’ from the conference craze.

Presented are recordings of the Berliner Congress Center from various unique sonic locations in the architecture of the building which are explored by folding the sounds on top of each-other, and magnifying the natural reverberations of the spaces. The recordings were made the morning of October 8, 2008 - and document the sounds of the preparation for the coming convention.

Constructed in 1964 and renovated in 2002, the Berliner Congress Center is an official Berlin historical monument. This online sound installation was created for the participants of the Web 2.0 Expo Europe.

Enjoy.

Guten Tag!

There is much going on today at the BCC as Web 2.0 Expo Europe kicks off. I wanted to write a short summary of the special things available to our guests that you might not have heard of:

* Community Lounge - located on the bottom level, you can power up, have meetings and use a workstation.

* Backchannel - use Twitter to comment on your session - tag it with #w2eb or any other session tag and hear what others are saying about the conference.

* Virtual Break Room - take a breather at any time by plugging your headsets in and listening to the soft sounds of the BCC before the conference craze.

* Women of Technology - down in our Community Lounge we’ve set a special table for the ladies in the house today. Leave your business card or notes for the table, gather there and try to use the space to network.

* Live Blogging / Writing Room - available during our keynotes, this is a special room with workstation set up, wifi, power and speakers so you can comfortably listen and work. Seats 16, first come first serve. Please head to the media center or show office for directions before keynotes.

The sun has risen, signaling the start of Web 2.0 Expo Europe 2008.

And with the launch of this year’s event - we also bring to you Six Groups LiveCommunity, our official backchannel. We’ve put this in place to give all of our guests an opportunity to connect, chat and discuss the conference sessions, as they are taking place.

It’s super easy to use this backchannel as it’s been integrated into our Crowdvine social network. When you go to the conference schedule, you will see a bar at the top of the webpage.

Users can either participate through existing Twitter accounts, by creating a Six Groups account, or by using a ‘Guest’ account.

If you’re using Twitter, simply add one of these hash tags for the session you are in and the tweet will automatically get aggregated. SIMPLE!

aka-aki evolved from the founders diploma project at the University of the Arts Berlin. The aka-aki approach is to bring about the functions we know from internet communities into real life, where they’re much more useful than in the virtual space. Because real life does not just take place in front of a computer, it’s happening in the streets, on trains, at parties, in universities and in clubs. So aka-aki decided to enhance reality with functions we know from virtuality. That’s not science fiction. At Startup Ignite the company will give an exclusive preview of the aka-aki iPhone app that is to be launched within the next weeks.

Our advisory board member, community enthusiast and blogger extrodinaire Nicole Simon has done a phenomenal job of pulling together Berlin Web Week’s Girl Geek Dinner - which happens to be the kick-off networking event for Web 2.0 Expo Europe :)

The international guest list is comprised of representatives from Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States.

And the secret about Girl Geek Dinners (globally) is that men can only come as a guest of a female attendee. But the smart men find a way to come, right? But at 55% female, we’re still dominating our own event. Whew :)

Check out this amazing guest list:

Many thanks Nicole. I look forward to seeing everyone there!
