As a leading (and very large) conference and expo we understand the importance of doing our part to help make this world a better place. We are continuing our efforts to green-ify our event and curating thought-provoking sessions about the state of our environment.
We’re also big fans of organizations committed to social change and action.
At Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco this past April we established a Non-Profit Pavilion and teamed up with groups that spread the gift of philanthropy, knowledge, health, political transparency, entrepreneurship, social change, empowerment… and more.
We plan to bring the goodwill to the East Coast so at Web 2.0 Expo New York this September we’re happy to offer a select group of non-profits a booth in our Pavilion.
Just answer this question as a comment for your chance to get a booth on our Expo floor, on-site branding, and inclusion in our program guide addendum. We’ll even throw in Internet drops
What are some cool ways your non-profit has used Web 2.0 in the fulfillment of your mission? Share some case study stories.
We want to hear your stories!
And if you’ve got any questions – please post them here and I’ll get back to you.

An internal Web 2.0 Expo committee will select the booth recipients and announcements will be made the first week of August.

The Knowmore.org crew would totally appreciate the opportunity to represent @ the Web 2.0 Expo. Below are three cool ways we’ve used Web 2.0 to fulfill our mission:
1 – We recently launched a revolutionary Firefox Extension that helps you find out more about the environmental and social impact of companies, brands, and products as you browse the web. This project won 2nd place @ the 2008 NetSquared Mashup Challenge. Check it out here – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7342
2 – We built a branded video player called “Uncommercial” that showcases informative and empowering consumer activist videos from YouTube and Google Video. Check it out here – http://www.knowmore.org/uncommercial/
3 – We were one of the first nonprofits to use wikis and engage the community on a level playing field to fulfill our mission of holding corporations accountable. Eric Cooper, one of our rock-star developers, also recently built one of the best social bookmarking extensions for MediaWiki sites. While soon to be released to the MediaWiki community, you can see it in practice here — http://www.knowmore.org/wiki/index.php?title=Image:American_Apparel%2C_LLC-logo.png
We also use social networks like Twitter, Facebook, & MySpace (18,000+ friends) to get the word out and inspire action.
Knowmore is a 501 (c) 3 non profit organization w/the main office in Providence, RI.
Thanks for considering us for the Non-Profit Pavilion! We think this would be a great opportunity to share our stories and learn from others’ experiences.
Best,
– Joe Solomon

Social Actions (www.socialactions.com) is a nonprofit initiative committed to leveraging web 2.0 to connect individuals with actionable opportunities. By encouraging individuals to take action using social media, our work is increasing the scope and impact of the citizen sector.
Toward this end, Social Actions:
* Provides a search interface of actionable opportunities, ranging from simple actions such as donating $5 to a p2p fundraising campaign to creating longterm service-based relationships with people trying to make something happen half way around the world.
* Aggregates actions from 19 social action platforms, including DonorsChoose, Kiva, Change.org, Care2 and others;
* Consults with foundations, nonprofits, and companies on how to embrace micro-philanthropy;
* Encourages collaboration among social action platforms.
Social Actions encourages collaboration among social action platforms in an effort to ensure that the web 2.0 technology underlying online social activism integrates well and reflects the full potential of social media.
We are a non-profit virtual organization founded in September 2007, with consultants based in Quebec, Michigan and British Columbia. Our community members are based around the world.
The best place to learn more about Social Actions is to read through the archives of our Google group.

We would love to have an opportunity to feature our work at Web 2.0 NYC. This past spring, we received a number of grants and awards, including a third place finish at the NetSquared Mashup Challenge, hosted at Cisco Headquarters.
Featuring our work at Web 2.0 NYC would be a great way to continue building the momentum around our innovative and entirely online nonprofit initiative.
All the best,
Peter

Hi Janetti – we certainly have some interesting stories to share with you, but are there other options to gain some marketing exposure other than a booth? I only ask as being a not for profit (and spending donor dollars wisely) we might not have enough staff to man a booth.
Let me know, thanks.
Hi JJ,
We’ll soon be launching CrowdVine, our official social network. I’ll make a post once that goes live (in the next few weeks).
As an attendee you can sign up and join the community – it’s not a direct marketing tool but if you’ve got news of value, I encourage you to share.
Hope this helps…
~ Janetti

We have given away over 6 million dollars worth of Apple iBooks, and Microsoft Suite to the poorest children in Louisiana, who were also afflicted by Rita and Katrina, by teaming up with Apple and Microsoft Corp.
Through webconferencing software, use of webcams, and latest available educational software, we have been able to train the teachers of Louisiana to pass on their increased knowledge to these children.
By partnering with Nickelodeon and by giving the children digitalcamcorders, we have been able to motivate them to create and produce mini-documentaries about their lives in Louisiana, and our winners have been praised and featured on Nickelodeon.
We continously strive to find ways to integrate the lastest advancement in technology into the curricula of these children, tapping into their hidden talents, and giving them an opportunity that they would have never had before.
We believe in ample education for everey child in the world regardless of his or her social status, and financial capabilities, and have started similar initiatives in sub-Sahran Africa, including Burundi in East Africa, the poorest nation in the world today.
